How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

How often you should get a haircut depends on your style and hair type. Our Christchurch barbers break it down.

There's no single right answer to "how often should I get a haircut" — it depends entirely on the cut you're wearing and how fast your hair grows. That said, most of the guys who sit in our chairs fall into a pretty predictable rhythm once they know what to look for.

Short back and sides, fades and skin fades

If you're wearing a fade or anything with tight, tapered sides, plan on coming in every 2 to 3 weeks. Fades grow out fastest right where the contrast matters most — the line between the skin and the hair softens quickly, and after about three weeks it starts looking more "grown out" than "styled." Guys who want their fade crisp year-round usually book on a set schedule rather than waiting until it looks messy.

Classic style cuts and longer looks

If you're keeping more length on top — a classic scissor cut, a textured crop, or anything you're growing out — you've got more room to move. Every 5 to 8 weeks is typical. The shape holds longer because there's less short, fast-growing hair on show, but the cut will still lose its edges over time, especially around the neckline and ears.

Beards need their own schedule

If you're maintaining a beard alongside your cut, don't forget it grows at its own pace. A neckline and cheek line-up every 2 to 3 weeks keeps a beard looking intentional rather than just "unshaven." Pair it with your haircut visit and it's one trip instead of two.

The real test: watch the mirror, not the calendar

Calendars are a guide, not a rule. The better signal is what you see day to day — if you're reaching for product more often just to make it behave, if the fade's lost its line, or if the beard's starting to look like it's wearing you instead of the other way round, it's time. Walk-ins are welcome at both our Christchurch locations, or book online and we'll get you sorted before it gets to that point.
