How to Maintain a Beard: A Barber's Guide

Keep your beard sharp between trims. Our Christchurch barbers cover washing, oiling and shaping a healthy beard.

A good beard trim only lasts as long as the maintenance behind it. Here's what actually keeps a beard looking sharp — and comfortable — between visits.

Wash it, but not with your regular shampoo

Beard hair is coarser than the hair on your head and the skin underneath it is often drier. Regular shampoo can strip both. A dedicated beard wash two to three times a week keeps it clean without leaving the skin underneath tight and flaky.

Oil it daily, not just when it feels dry

Beard oil isn't just for shine — it conditions the hair and the skin underneath, which is where most of the itching and flaking comes from, especially in the first few weeks of growing one out. A few drops worked in after a shower, while the beard's still slightly damp, is the easiest habit to build.

Brush or comb it into shape

A boar-bristle brush or wide-tooth comb trains the hair to sit in one direction and distributes oil evenly. Do it daily and the beard grows in more uniform, which makes every trim after that easier to shape.

Trim the strays yourself, leave the lines to your barber

Between visits it's fine to snip the odd hair that's grown noticeably longer than the rest. What's harder to do yourself — and easy to get wrong — is the neckline and cheek line, which is what actually makes a beard look deliberate rather than just "a few weeks unshaven." That's worth leaving to a barber.

Get a line-up every 2 to 3 weeks

Book a beard trim on the same schedule as your haircut and the two stay in sync — no awkward stretch where the beard's outgrown the cut or vice versa. Shop our beard oils online or book a trim at either of our Christchurch locations.
